The Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society takes great pride in releasing this great coffee table book : Plantations of Saint Bartholomew's Parish.

This "4 color" coffee table book features photography by Ron Anton Rocz, prominent Charleston photographer, with text by Nina Burke of Ravenwood Plantation in Walterboro, and features 27 plantations in Colleton County South Carolina, formerly Saint Bartholomew's Parish.

Rich in history, and blessed with landscapes of inspiring beauty these plantations have, for centuries, maintained a lifestyle unique to the Lowcountry of South Carolina.

These plantations form the heart of the Ace Basin, named for the pristine Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto Rivers. The legacy of the rice planting era, combined with a tradition of stewardship, has led to the preservation, conservation, and restoration of these beautiful properties.

The plantations date back to the eighteenth century, with an array of houses ranging from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century, and representing an exciting diversity of styles, due to Sherman's devastating march through Colleton County during the Civil War (which destroyed everything older). Most of these plantations are private enclaves used primarily for sporting and conservation. With few exceptions, these plantations have never been published before.

The book features not only the houses and their interiors, but the diversity of the plantations "outbuildings", slave quarters, praise houses, race tracks, rice fields, gardens, as well as exquisite vistas of Lowcountry swamps, rivers, marshland, and centuries- old live oak avenues.
